History Western Civilization: Lesson 35 Essay – (1) “Choose a work of art from ancient Greece and do the following: (A) provide basic background, (B) identify which period of Greek art it belongs to, (C) explain what that period is known for, and (D) explain how the work you have chosen illustrates the characteristics of its period.” (2) “How does ancient Greek religion resemble or differ from the religion of the Hebrews?”

I have chosen Odysseus and the Sirens for this essay. The artist’s nickname is Siren Painter because his real name was unknown. This is a red figure – black figure painted vase. The vase depicts a scene from the Odyssey where Odysseus ties himself to the mast of a ship so that he can listen to the Sirens sing. The Sirens were bird-women that lured sailors to their island. It was painted around 500 BC. This was during the Archaic Period. During the Archaic Period vases were created with red clay and the artist would make an indented area to fill with black paint. In the case of Odysseus and the Sirens the artist filled the background with black paint and let the foreground remain red.

In ancient Greek religion they practiced lots of rituals. The Hebrews practiced rituals too, but the Greeks’ religion revolved around rituals. The Hebrews religion focused primarily on ethics and living a good and productive life.

English 2 Western Literature: Lesson 35 Essay – “What are the main differences between Genesis 1 and Theogany?”

The Hebrew’s God was perfect. He did not sin and He did not lie. The Greek gods would lie and sin. Ethics were important in Genesis 1 and not important in Theogany. The Greek gods only cared about benefiting themselves, they did not care a out being moral. There were multiple Greek gods, but there was only one Hebrew God. The Hebrew God was always just and sensible, but the Greek gods would often act stupid or make mistakes. None of the Greek gods were all powerful and they would fight with each other. The Hebrew God was all powerful. The Greek gods would frequently try to trick men and the Greek gods would not always enforce proper sanctions. The God from Genesis enforced negative sanctions every time it was necessary.

History Western Civilization: Lesson 30 Essay- (1)”Describe the circumstances leading to the Persian Wars. Why were they significant events in Western history?” (2)”Why was the Peloponnesian War fought? What was its long term significance?”

The Persians got salty at Athens because Athens sent reinforcements to the Ionian Greeks. The Ionian Greeks were fighting against Persia and they ended up losing. The Persians wanted revenge on Athens so they sent out ships and troops to fight the Athenians. The wars were significant because the victory of the Greeks allowed them to survive so that their culture could help form our modern-western culture. They preserved Greek culture. If the Persians had won our society today would look completely different.

The primary reason that the Peloponnesian War was fought was because Sparta was beginning to feel threatened by Athens’ army and power. Athens was starting to boss around other city-states and Sparta knew they had to put Athens back in their place. Sparta ended up wrecking Athens. After the war Athens and Sparta were tired and weak, then Phillip and Alexander stepped in and wrecked the Greeks. The war was significant because it made the Greeks vulnerable and an easy target.

English 2 Western Literature: Lesson 30 Essay- “What is the view of the biblical materials on the role of ethics in the development of history?”

The people who wrote in the Bible knew that life is about happiness and doing what is ethically correct. A society will become prosperous if they use wisdom and make good decisions. God will bless an ethically correct society. It will “inherit” God’s blessings. An evil society will be destroyed. People that choose to do ethically wrong things will hurt themselves and others. Those bad decisions will put a drain on that society. God will also punish the people there for doing evil things. They will “inherit” death and destruction also said as “inheriting nothing”. Only societies that have people that make ethically correct decisions will advance and be blessed in history.

Biology: Lesson 30 Essay- “Joking aside, why are men far more likely than women to be colorblind?”

First off, we must understand what determines if a person is male or female. In human reproduction the mother’s egg will always contain an X chromosome. The father’s sperm will contain either an X or Y chromosome. So you can end up with XX or XY. The best way to understand why males are more likely to become colorblind is by using a punnett square. Colorblindness is determined by the X chromosome. Imagine X^N is the allele for normal vision. The allele for colorblind vision is X^n. Imagine that you have a father with normal vision and a mother that is a heterozygous carrier. Also, colorblindness is recessive. Your situation should look like (X^N Y)x(X^N X^n). Your results will be (X^N X^N) and (X^N X^n) for two females. Both will have normal vision, but one will be a carrier of colorblindness. Your two male results will be (X^N Y) and (X^n Y). This means there is a 50% chance of a male child being colorblind. The reason this happens is because there is no other dominant X chromosome that could mask the recessive X chromosome.
